When I moved to San Antonio four years ago, the health food scene was basically non-existent. Yeah, there was a Whole Foods and a Trader Joe’s, but to most people “healthy” meant ordering a salad at a restaurant. Turns out there are a few good places spread out across town, but Google won’t give you the insight I’ve included in this post. I’ve done all the hard work for you, I’ve found all the best (actually healthy) spots in San Antonio and they’re all listed below. Whether you are traveling here for a quick trip or you live close by, you’ll love each place on this list.
Pharm Table
Not only is this place the healthiest food you can find in San Antonio, it’s also the most delicious! Pharm Table is located downtown, just a few streets from the Alamo. Most of the food is organic, locally source and seasonal. The menu integrates elements of Aruyuveda and Blue Zones diets. I would tell you my favorite dish, but honestly, you could order absolutely anything and be pleasantly surprised. Definitely go with the Aruyuvedic starter, it hits all 6 parts of the flavor wheel. If you’re feeling a sweet brunch, the Vegan Sweet Potato Waffles are a great choice. However, the Breakfast pizza is great if your more of a savory fan. If you’re going for lunch, I recommend the Farm to Table Tacos or the Punjab Curried Kitchari. Like I said, you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. The woman, Chef Elizabeth, who owns this place is super passionate and knowledgable about the food she serves. It’s a quite a privilege to have her restaurant here in San Antonio.
The Good Kind
There are two locations, one is in the Pearl Brewery Food Hall and the other is in Southtown. Are you with a group of people that don’t love healthy food? Suggest eating at the Food Hall, they can order a greasy burger and you can get a soba noodle salad bowl or one of Good Kind’s delicious paninis! Everyone can grab a bite to eat and then sit out on the lawn for a picnic, if the weather is nice. But if everyone in your crew is on board with eating somewhere healthy for lunch, I recommend going to their sit down restaurant and ordering a market bowl (Black rice with grilled, roasted and raw vegetables, legumes with their Hollyhock sauce). They have vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and dairy-free options. I met the woman behind this brand and she is incredibly sweet and passionate about what’s she is doing with the Good Kind. I love supporting woman with a dream, so definitely go try it out!
First Course
Need a quick (healthy bite to eat for lunch but don’t feel like dealing with hassle of a restaurant? This is the place for you. Everything is “build-it-yourself” style, so you can get exactly what you want. I usually get a salad with salmon, but they also do wraps and soups. You can really make your food any way you want it, add bleu cheese if that’s your thing or pears for a sweet touch. My favorite Saturday activity is going on a morning hike at Frederich park then driving 1 minute down the road for lunch at this place. I also met the owner of this establishment and she is such a kind woman that works extremely hard to serve only the best and most fresh food at First Course.
The Cove
This is the place for anyone, whether or not they deem themselves “healthy” or not. They basically serve two things: burgers and tacos. Both are done so well. The shrimp and the fish tacos were amazing, the sauce was unreal! But the burgers…wow. I got “the real burger” on a gluten-free bun, and it was incredible. Especially paired with their sweet potato fries. There is a long list of different options based on how you like your burger (vegan, chicken, no bun, etc.). Their food is organic, sustainable and sourced locally. It’s located downtown and has a really neat outdoor seating area to hang out at during the summer months.
Five Points Local
This place is just a vibe. It’s half restaurant, half yoga studio. Since its located downtown, its the perfect Saturday activity. Book a yoga class and then grab a meal afterward. Its a 100% Gluten Free Restaurant, with vegetarian, vegan and paleo options. I’ve been here for breakfast, lunch, dinner and for a quick GF cookie stop. All time favorite meal here was definitely the curry. Even my dad who is not a fan of anything slightly considered “healthy,” loved it. Usually when I go, I order either the Harvest bowl or the Karma bowl and add chicken. I have a friend who has celiac disease and he is obsessed with Five Points bakery. They make all kind of gluten free and vegan desserts. My favorite was the chocolate chip cookie, ugh I want one now!!
Green Vegetarian
Green is one of the biggest veggie restaurants in Texas with two locations in San Antonio, one at the Pearl and one off NW Military. This restaurant provides options for anyone, whether you are vegan or not. They offer brunch on Sunday’s and food all day from Monday-Friday, but they are closed on Saturdays. If you are visiting Green for breakfast/brunch, I would definitely recommend either Chris’ Crazy Tacos or their fluffy pancakes. As for lunch/dinner, I would 100% try out the fiesta nachos. They are an appetizer, but they left me so satisfied. Think crispy tortilla chips loaded with refried beans, cashew queso, tomatoes, pickles onions, jalapeños, and guacamole. If nachos aren’t your thing, the Monks bowl is also a solid choice. It’s a mixture of black and pinto beans, quinoa, kale, and homemade chipotle mayo. I love spending time at the Pearl, eating at Green and then going for ice cream after for the perfect day.
Miss Chickpea Bakeshop
This place opened up February of this year and its grow in popularity rather quickly. With good reason, because WOW I think this vegan donut tops any regular donut I’ve ever had. I also tried a vegan jalapeño sausage and cheddar kolache that was UNREAL. I couldn’t believe the cheese wasn’t made from milk. Besides amazing donuts and kolaches, they also sell tons of other baked goods like pop tarts, cupcakes, croissants, etc. And if you love coffee like me, they have an extensive menu. I order “Moon Milk” with oat milk and a pump of their house-made pumpkin spice syrup. It’s a gorgeous blue latte that tastes like heaven! I also noticed that they bake cakes for events, so I may have to hit them up for a dairy-free, vegan cake one day.
Steel City Pops
It gets really really hot in San Antonio, basically from March-November. So a cold (gluten-free) popsicle is the best treat! They’re all made with fresh fruit and organic cane sugar, and you can dip your popsicle in chocolate and dredge, drizzle or dust it with all kinds of delicious toppings. I love getting the Fredericksburg Peach flavor when its the right season, you can really tell everything is made super fresh. And get this, they even have paleo pops now! How stinking cool is that?!
Revolucion
One of the coolest spots in San Antonio for sure. The entire space is gorgeous with white walls and lots of windows. But the real star of Revolucion is their menu. They not only make the most gorgeous smoothie bowls and amazing lattes, they also make all kinds of healthy foods. Elaborate toasts, tamales, salads. They also sell specialty food items (like Coconut Cult) that you can’t find anywhere else. One big thing they’re known for is their juices, which are phenomenal. Coming in flavors like Dragonfruit Limeade and Black Gold. My go to order when I visit is a London Fog with their homemade almond milk (yes, 100% homemade and 100% amazing) and a pacific bowl. There are two locations: one in Alamo Heights (my fave) or downtown.
Rise Up
The ultimate place for Acai bowls in San Antonio! I ordered the Lavender Acai bowl (which has coconut milk, mango, pineapple, lavender, honey and avocado. Topped with flowers, honey, granola and blueberries) and added collagen as my protein. My friend order the AB (their most popular: almond milk, strawberries, banana, almond butter, topped with granola, bananas, strawberries and almond butter). She also order a latte and said it was great! You call tell everything is super fresh and made with quality ingredients. The place is pretty big so it’s perfect for a little hang out spot. Besides Acai bowls, they also have lots of smoothie options. The two locations are: Stone Oak and Alamo Heights.
